One of the big problems with many high-gain pedals is they sound great when you try them out at the shop or when your playing on your own but as soon as you try to play with a backing track, or in a band situation or try to record they get lost in the mix, as a result of the mids being too scooped. Not so with the TC Electronic Rottweiler. At the flick of a switch, you have two different mid range voicings which boost mid range to cut through the mix, great for jamming to a backing track but vital if you are performing live.
Regardless of whether you a have a tube amp or not the TC Electronic Rottweiler features a distortion circuit that utilizes soft clipping, the same way real tube amps do, allowing you to achieve genuine tube like response and tone, using virtually any amp. The TC Electronic Rottweiler has the usual Gain and Level controls but these are complemented by independent Bass and Treble controls, controlling a 2 band active equalizer and allowing you to shape them individually. Setting all Tone (Bass & Treble) & Gain controls at 12 o'clock and the voice switch down and using a Les Paul style guitar with the bridge pickup active brings on a sabbathesque tone. Turn the Treble control down to muddy it up a bit then switch to the neck pickup for an even more muddy sound. Now flick the voice control up and bring Treble back up to noon and switch to the bridge pickup for an 80's metal sound. Bring the Gain control down a little (and the Vol down a little to clean up the sound) to find it still gives a well overdriven sound even at low gain and low volume settings. Crank the Gain all the way up to get that full on thrash tone going.
Added to this, the TC Electronic Rottweiler comes in a robust, die-cast aluminum housing with a heavy duty footswitch well up to the rigors of stage use, quick and easy one-screw battery access for fast changes and True-Bypass so you get zero loss of your guitar's natural tone when the effect is turned off.
If you are looking for a a true metal distortion pedal, the TC Electronic 960730001 Rottweiler Distortion gives you a high-gain pedal that lets you create the tone and raw power that only high-gain tube amps used to be able to deliver.
