First released in 1999 the Line 6 DL4, has withstood the assault from numerous pretenders to its throne. A sublime, easy to navigate form factor coupled with a prime selection of modeling sounds provide its enduring character.

The Line 6 DL4 is the ideal solution for guitar players who value high quality, delay modeling in a single, robust unit, factors which have seen it remain at the forefront for more than 10 years.

Pros:
  • Rich, classic, modeled sounds
  • Robust build but still a cool retro look
Cons:
  • Fewer builtins and patches than some
  • Power adapter not included

One of the best things about the Line 6 DL4 is its inspired selection of 16 classic, modeled sounds for the onboard effects types. Featuring takes on the Boss DM-2®, the Electro-Harmonix Memory Man® and the Maestro EP-2 Echoplex® tape echo (think Eddie Van Halen circa 1970's) plus a sprinkling of vintage valve delay sounds (incorporating the associated choruses and vibratos), coupled with reverse-delay, ping-pong and multi tap delay settings and U2-style rhythmic delays. Using the looper function on the Line 6 DL4 is easy. By using it on the half-speed setting you can record loops up to 28 seconds long. If you then change it back to normal speed, your recorded loop plays twice as fast so you can really achieve your own unique sounds!

The Line 6 DL4 has only 3 programmable patch spaces available, but since you can create numerous delay sounds easily with the tap-tempo switch and real-time controls, this will be more than enough for most of us. Construction of the Line 6 DL4 is robust, courtesy of a steel housing and a simple but sturdy front panel layout. Yet the classic, old-school stompbox look remains, along with its ease-of-use which means a shorter learning curve and more playing time. Something I value highly.

Extra features of the Line 6 DL4 include, 24-bit true stereo signal path, true bypass switching so you can also play direct from your guitar to your amp, expression pedal input, discrete stereo inputs and outputs (loop sampler combines signal to mono) and it can run from 4 x 'C' size batteries or an optional power adapter.

If you are looking to not only create classic sounds but also to explore your own creativity, the Line 6 DL4 is an ideal delay modeler for you. Serious delay and looper fanatics however, may want lots more built-in effects and programmable patches.
